MISD Born to Invent: Michigan and Beyond!

UK January 2024 - March 2024

For this year’s challenge, in partnership with MISD and the MISTEM network, we learned from the past and looked to the future to find out if children from Macomb County, Michigan had what it takes to make history with their invention ideas!

Inventors of Michigan have changed the world with their ideas, from the humble lightbulb to futuristic fiber optic and many more jaw-dropping inventions in between.

In the past hundred years our world has changed more than ever before. There are more humans on the planet and people are living much longer due to amazing medical and technological innovations.

But this brings many challenges too, like a bigger demand for food and electricity, less space for plants and animals, changes in the weather and many other problems big and small.

With the spirit of famous inventors to look up to, such as Thomas Edison and Marie Curie, we challenged little inventors to come up with genius solutions to real challenges people are facing in Michigan and beyond!

The challenge was divided into eight unique and pressing problems posed by eight equally unique people. Participating children could choose whichever problem they liked and got inventing to help solve it.

Did they help Dominic from Newcastle, England with an invention to entertain his baby whilst he works? Or did they give Jaxon from Michigan, US a hand with building and sorting with his Lego pieces?

Perhaps they were eager to help Dileep from Masai Mara, Kenya as he needed an invention to help animals access water and survive droughts. Or maybe they rushed to Aniva from Samoa, Polynesia's aid and invented to protect people's land from the effects of rising sea levels!

What kind of ingenious solutions did they come up with to the wide variety of life's challenges?

A selection of winners will see their invention brought to life by Michigan's finest makers!
